This position is a key epidemiologic resource lead for the coordination and support in the subject area of emerging and chemical contaminants in the food, feed, and agriculture sectors on behalf of MDARD and the bureau. This includes identification of and response  to the impacts of emerging and chemical contaminants, efforts to address and mitigate current issues caused by emerging and chemical contaminants, and work to prevent or minimize future impacts. The position liaises with internal and external partners and agencies and involves a combination of data analysis and collaboration with various stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations for mitigating exposure risks. This position is responsible for assessing the relationship between environmental factors and human health, specifically how environmental contaminants such as air pollution, water contamination, or other pathways of contamination can affect the food, feed, produce, the agriculture sector, as well as human or animal health.  General summary of duties:

  • Serves as a key technical resource for analysis, leadership, oversight and coordination of projects, activities and reporting related to emerging or chemical contaminant investigations in food, feed, and agriculture sector activities;
  • Assists with coordinating Bureau and MDARD activities related to emerging or chemical contaminant investigations in food, feed, and agriculture sector activities; 
  • Assists to investigate potential pathways and exposure routes of emerging or chemical contaminant investigations in food, feed, and agriculture sector in an area, as well as the possibility of potential health effects of exposure through consumption or usage of the food, feed, or agricultural product;
  • Functions as a technical resource in the areas of epidemiology and analysis concerning emerging or chemical contaminant investigations, introduction, and effect on food, feed, and agriculture sector with knowledge and expertise to interpret epidemiological data and identify trends rapidly;
  • Collects, summarizes, analyzes, and effectively communicates surveillance and epidemiologic information to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Provides input to enhance the department's response capabilities; 
  • Liaises with internal and external state, local, federal and national industry partners, and consumers, as needed;
  • Develops and conducts training for MDARD staff in the investigation related activities. 

 

This position is required to follow established standard operating procedures and meet quantity, quality, and timeliness standards for assigned work.
