In 2003, California Newsreel and UC Berkeley released an infamous documentary series, Race: The Power of an Illusion. This series grapples with the scientific discovery that there is no biological foundation for race and explores the way that racial classification was created and maintained in the United States since the country’s formation. In the first iteration of this series, scientists, professors, and students are interviewed about the ways that race is understood biologically to equate to biological superiority or inferiority. Before and after an excerpted viewing of The Difference Between Us, participants will engage in critical discussion about race and how it operates in society
